Ezekiel Nathaniel breaks 400m hurdles national record

Ezekiel Nathaniel broke his own National Record in the men’s 400m hurdles at the Big 12 Championships in Texas, USA on Saturday, crossing the line in 48.00s.

The Baylor University athlete won ahead of defending champion Caleb Dean who finished second in 48.43s while Oskar Edlund was third in 48.82s.

His time was the championship record, the third-fastest in the world this year and also the eighth-fastest ever in Africa.

Texas Tech University’s Rosemary Chukwuma won the women’s 100m in 11.12s, while her college mate Temitope Adeshina won her second women’s high jump Big 12 title of the year with a season-best mark of 1.90m.

Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi also from Baylor won the men’s javelin event, throwing a championship record distance of 80.02m.

Nathaniel had earlier set the National Record last month, running 48.29s at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida USA.

The 20-year-old is part of the 11 Nigerian track and field athletes that have already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
