Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers netted his 24th goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to earn Rangers a win as they played out a thrilling 2-2 draw against St. Mirren at The SMISA Stadium on Saturday.

Rangers had already been ruled out of the Scottish Premiership league title race before the match, following Celtic’s commanding 5-0 victory over Dundee United. Nevertheless, Barry Ferguson’s side remained focused, dominating the game and earning a deserved lead in the 42nd minute courtesy of Cyriel Dessers’ goal.

However, Rangers’ advantage was short-lived, as Mark O’Hara quickly equalised with a well-hit volley in the 44th minute, sending both teams into half-time with the scores tied.

Unfazed by the disappointment of surrendering their earlier lead, Rangers started the second half with renewed determination and went back in front in the 52nd minute through a goal from Nikolas Raskin. Nonetheless, they once again failed to hold onto their advantage, as Conor McMenamin struck an equaliser in the 73rd minute.

Although Rangers pushed hard to reclaim their lead, they couldn’t find another breakthrough, with the hosts standing firm to earn a 2-2 draw. The result added to Rangers’ frustrations, as their wait for another league title since 2021 goes on.

While Celtic celebrate their fourth straight league title, Rangers will be hoping to dampen their spirits when the two sides meet in a highly-anticipated Old Firm derby clash on Sunday, May 4.
