Tom Dele-Bashiru’s Watford have sacked head coach Tom Cleverley following a string of poor results which saw the Hornets finish 14th in the Championship with 57 points.
Cleverley took over as Watford’s head coach in March last year, initially on an interim basis before being appointed permanently after guiding the team away from a potential relegation fight. However, his tenure ended with four defeats in his last five matches and only five wins in 2025.
In a statement released today, the club’s management confirmed Tom Cleverley’s departure and expressed their gratitude for his contributions during his time at Watford.
Sporting Director Gian Luca Nani said: “We thank Tom for his service – not just in his role as Head Coach but for everything he has given Watford as a player and member of staff.
“But the time has come for a change and to build on what we believe is a young and talented squad that will have benefitted from the experience of the Championship this season.”

“It has been a privilege to work closely with Tom; to understand how he sees the game and his enthusiasm for everything here. He deserves to be recognised for this and I’m sure he will have a bright future in the game.
“Tom will always be part of Watford in recognition of all that he has achieved over so many years,” the statement concluded.

Tom Dele-Bashiru, who netted four goals this season, along with his teammates, will now focus on the club’s next move following the managerial change. The Nigerian midfielder is under contract until 2028 and is expected to remain with Watford to aid their push for Premier League promotion next season.
