Nigeria’s Ese Brume begins her quest for another global medal as the women’s long jump event starts at the Paris 2024 Olympics today.

Brume won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and will hope to at least match that result or achieve better with either a silver or gold medal.

The 28-year-old has a medal from every global event she has competed in, including World Championships bronze and silver medals in 2019 and 2022 respectively, an Olympics bronze medal in Tokyo 2020, a World Indoors silver medal in 2022, and Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2014 and 2022.

She also has two African Games titles (2019 and 2023), four African Championships titles (2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024), and holds the African record with a jump of 7.17m.

Brume is up against familiar competitors, including reigning Olympics and 2022 World Champion Malaika Mihambo from Germany, Rio 2016 Olympics bronze medalist and reigning World Champion Ivana Spanovic from Serbia, and reigning World Indoor Champion Tara Davis-Woodhall from the USA.

Mihambo, who has just returned from an injury layoff, is the athlete to beat with a world lead of 7.22m, while Davis-Woodhall is not far behind with her season’s best of 7.18m, leaving both as the only athletes with jumps over 7m this season.

While Brume has not had a stellar season, with a season’s best of 6.84m achieved in February, many Nigerians will bank on her consistency at the global stage as a reason to expect another medal from her.

For the first time in Olympic history, three Nigerians will be participating in the women’s long jump event, with Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor also competing.

Brume and Usoro have been drawn in Qualification Group A, while Ochonogor is in Group B. Athletes who meet the qualification standard of 6.75m or are among the top 12 performers will advance to the final.

The women’s long jump is the only individual event that has brought Nigeria an Olympic gold, with Chioma Ajunwa’s historic leap at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

Blessing Okagbare also won a silver medal for Nigeria in the long jump event at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

The qualification round of the women’s long jump event starts at 10.15 a.m. Nigerian time.
