Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent abdominal surgery on Monday night after sustaining an injury during Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City.
The Nigeria international collided with the goalpost, and according to PA News, the surgery, though not life-threatening, was urgently required due to the unique nature of the injury.
Awoniyi, who replaced Ibrahim Sangaré in the 83rd minute, initially received treatment on the pitch. However, upon returning to play, he struggled to move properly and was left on the field until the final whistle. A victory in that match could have boosted Forest’s chances of securing a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The incident reportedly sparked frustration from Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who stormed onto the pitch post-match to confront head coach Nuno Espírito Santo.
Although the result confirmed at least a UEFA Conference League place for Forest, the club had hoped to qualify for the Champions League or, at minimum, the Europa League.
With two matches remaining, Forest’s fate is out of their hands. Even if they win both—including a crucial final-day clash with Chelsea—their qualification hopes hinge on Aston Villa, Manchester City, or Newcastle dropping points.
Awoniyi, a key player for Forest last season, has had a disappointing campaign this term, scoring just once in 26 Premier League appearances. He will miss the club’s final two matches of the season.
