The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are reportedly pushing for FIFA to deduct 3 points from South Africa for fielding Teboho Mokoena, who was deemed to be ineligible, against Lesotho.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was in action, playing 82 minutes before being substituted out for Thalente Mbatha as South Africa recorded a crucial 2-0 victory over Lesotho in their World Cup qualifier clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane.

However, it has been revealed that Teboho Mokoena received a yellow card against Benin Republic in South Africa’s 2-1 win before receiving another yellow card against Zimbabwe in their 3-1 win.

According to the rules, Teboho Mokoena should have served a suspension against Lesotho due to accumulating two yellow cards in previous World Cup qualifiers, but instead, he played in the match.

The rule book states that: “If players or team officials receive two cautions in one match or in two different matches of the same competition, they will be automatically suspended from their team’s subsequent match.”

Nigerian supporters are eagerly hoping for a potential 3-point deduction for South Africa, optimistic that it will improve Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup, although South Africa and CAF have yet to comment on the matter.
