Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is buzzing after Udinese secured their Serie A spot for next season.

A dramatic 1-0 win over Frosinone on the final day saved them from relegation, with Okoye himself playing a key role.

Frosinone’s loss meant their automatic relegation, while Udinese breathed a sigh of relief. Okoye, who recently earned a recall to the national team, impressed with several crucial saves during the match.

Okoye spent the first part of the season on the bench behind Marco Silvestri. However, his chance came against Bologna, where he kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 victory. This performance cemented his place as Udinese’s starting goalkeeper, and he went on to record five clean sheets in 21 appearances.

Elated about staying in Serie A, Okoye praised the fans for their unwavering support.

“Serie A is vital for the city, the fans, and the club. I’m overwhelmed with emotions right now. It’s a big opportunity for me to learn and improve. I have a fantastic coach, and I’m confident I’ll keep getting better.”

Okoye, who missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is delighted to be back in the national team fold. New coach George Finidi called him up for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin on June 7th and 10th.

“I’m thrilled to be back with the national team,” Okoye concluded. “Representing Nigeria is a huge honor for me and my family. But for now, Forza Udinese!”
