Tunisia’s U-20 men’s team, the Junior Carthage Eagles, will aim to break their nine-game winless run against West African opponents as they take on Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in their U-20 Africa Cup of Nations opener later today.

Tunisia have failed to secure a victory in their last nine matches against West African sides, with six draws and three losses. Their most recent win over a West African team dates back to 1987, when they beat Guinea 1-0.

Tunisia came up short in their most recent clash with Nigeria, as the Flying Eagles secured a commanding 4-0 victory in the third-place playoff of the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.

The 4-0 defeat to Nigeria was Tunisia’s third straight AFCON match in which they conceded over three goals, following a 3-3 draw with Congo and a 3-0 loss to Senegal.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will be aiming to continue their strong track record in AFCON openers, having won seven of their last ten opening matches. Their only setbacks were losses to Mali in 2013 and Senegal in 2023, along with a draw against Mali in 2001.

The Flying Eagles have advanced to the semi-finals in 16 of their 18 previous appearances, falling short at the group stage only in 1993 and 2001. They’ve secured a top-three finish on 15 occasions, with their sole fourth-place result coming in 2019.

With the stakes high and victory essential for both sides, the highly-anticipated showdown between Nigeria’s Flying Eagles and Tunisia’s Young Carthage Eagles is set to take place today at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo by 4pm West African Time.
