Super Eagles forward Tolu Arokodare has expressed his delight after netting his maiden goal for Nigeria, describing it as a major milestone and a source of motivation for greater achievements following a memorable night in Moscow.

Arokodare found the back of the net in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in the international friendly played on Friday, capitalising on a defensive error by goalkeeper Matvei Safonov to level the score after coming off the bench. The equaliser salvaged a result for the Eagles, keeping Eric Chelle’s unbeaten run alive.

The fixture marked Arokodare’s fourth appearance as a substitute for the national team, having previously featured off the bench in World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, as well as in the Unity Cup final clash with Jamaica.

In a message shared on his social media platforms, the 24-year-old striker thanked God for his first international goal, while declaring his ambition to build on the achievement. “First international goal, the journey has only just started. We thank God,” he posted.

With fierce competition among Nigeria’s attacking options, Arokodare’s impact in the friendly may have strengthened his case for inclusion in Eric Chelle’s squad, with upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September and a potential debut at the Africa Cup of Nations in December on the horizon.

The Genk striker capped off a stellar club season in Belgium, finishing as the top scorer in the Pro League with 21 goals and earning the prestigious Ebony Shoe award, given to the league’s best African player.
