Tolu Arokodare scores, misses penalty as Sevette dash Genk’s Champions League dream

Tolu Arokodare scored a goal and missed a penalty for Genk as they failed to book a UEFA Champions League group phase ticket after losing 4-1 on penalties to 10-man Sevette at the Cegeka Arena after both qualifying legs had ended 3-3 on aggregate 

The first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round had ended 1-1 in Switzerland a week ago. Arokodare was also on target in that encounter before the hosts grabbed a 77th-minute equalizer. The competitive second leg ended 2-2 after regulation and extra time.

Mike Ndayishimiye gave the hosts the lead in the 28th minute from the penalty spot. Timothe Cognat scored the equalizer in the 36th minute as both sides went into the half-time break 1-1.

Tolu Arokodare restored the lead for the hosts in the 51st minute with a commanding header but the visitors once again regained parity in the 63rd minute through Bedia Ivorien Chris Bedia.

Despite both teams’ attempts to get a winner in regulation time, the game went to penalty and the Swiss side came out with flying colours scoring four of their penalties while Genk failed woefully scoring just one. 

Tolu Arokodare, one of the heroes of the tie turned villain when he missed Genk’s third attempt while Ronny Rodelin scored his to send the hundreds of Sevette’s fans in the stadium into wild jubilation.

Sevette will play Glasgow Rangers in the final qualifying round. The draw for the group place of the Champions League comes up on Thursday, August 31.
