Stanley Eguma secured a sweet victory against his former club, guiding Enyimba to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rivers United in their first meeting since his departure in June 2024.
Left-back Imoh Obot scored a sublime freekick that proved to be the decisive goal in the 41st minute but despite several efforts by the visitors to restore parity, Enyimba’s defense held on strong while goalkeeper Henry Ani put up some impressive saves to help the hosts maintain their lead.
The win marked Enyimba’s eighth of the season in what has otherwise been a lackluster campaign. It also ended their two-game losing streak. However, despite the victory, the NPFL giants remain 10th in the standings as they aim for a top-three finish to secure a continental football spot.

Eguma, who had been with Rivers United (formerly Dolphins FC) since 2008, was relieved of his duties in 2024, making him the longest-serving top-flight club coach in the country.
He took over at Enyimba in December 2024 following their dismal start to the season under young manager Semi Olanrewaju. However, his arrival came too late to prevent the People’s Elephants from crashing out of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
