Sporting Lagos fined ₦1 million for fan misbehavior

Sporting Lagos has been fined ₦1 million for violating the security protocols outlined in the Framework and Rules of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) during their matchday 9 fixture against Heartland FC on Sunday in Lagos.

A statement released by the league board stated that the breach was a result of fans throwing objects onto the pitch in their game against Heartland FC, which ended in a 1-1 draw after Jonathan Alukwu’s 97th-minute strike canceled out Chinedu Brandon Ike’s 75th-minute opener.

The statement posted on microblogging platform X formerly Twitter read, “Sporting Lagos have been charged for breaching the Framework and Rules of #NPFL24 in the course of their match with Heartland last Sunday.

“The Lagos club breached rules after their supporters threw objects onto the pitch during the course of the match. Sporting Lagos have been fined N1 million for failing to provide adequate security and are directed to pay the fine within 14 days to avoid further sanctions.”

The NPFL disciplinary committee also advised the club to ensure strict security measures during their next home games, also stating that the club has the next 48 hours to appeal the board’s decision, threatening that a recurrence would attract tougher penalties.

“The club have been ordered to implement an effective matchday security arrangement and organize a reorientation program for their supporters. Sporting Lagos have been warned that any recurrence of the offense will lead to stiffer sanctions.
