Defender Fitina Omborenga and his younger brother, Yunusu Nshimiyimana, have left the Rwandan national team camp following the passing of their father.
According to reports, both players trained with the team on Monday morning but were granted permission to leave later that night upon receiving the sad news.
“They were given permission to leave the camp and attend their father’s burial,” federation media officer Maurice Mutuyimana told Times Sport.
As a show of support, the national team will observe a minute of silence before Tuesday’s training session, Mutuyimana added. The team also visited the players at their home on Tuesday.

Omborenga and Nshimiyimana are also the siblings of former Amavubi defender and current Gorilla FC assistant coach, Abouba Sibomana. The duo is expected to rejoin the squad ahead of Rwanda’s crucial World Cup qualifiers—against Nigeria’s Super Eagles on March 21 and Lesotho on March 25, both at the Amphoro Stadium.
Omborenga, who plays for Rayon Sports, and Nshimiyimana, who represents APR FC, were both included in Adel Amrouche’s 28-man squad for the upcoming fixtures.
At 28, Omborenga is a key player for Rwanda, having featured in all of the team’s last 17 matches. He also played every minute of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign last year.
Rwanda currently sits top of Group C with 7 points but they must avoid unfavorable results against Nigeria and Lesotho to boost their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup for what would be their first time qualification ever in the country’s history.
