Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar came from the bench to score the equaliser, helping Valencia secure a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de Vallecas on Saturday.

After playing 60 minutes in Valencia’s 1-0 win over Sevilla, Sadiq Umar was dropped to the bench as Hugo Duro started his first game since the 1-1 draw against Villarreal where the Nigerian striker also scored the equaliser.

Motivated to secure their first home win since February, Rayo Vallecano controlled possession and eventually got rewarded in the final minutes of the first half as César Tárrega scored an own goal, giving the hosts a slim advantage going into half time.

In an attempt to overturn the game, Carlos Corberan introduced Sadiq Umar in the 66th minute. The Nigerian striker made an immediate impact, scoring his fifth league goal 10 minutes later to level the scoreline.

Despite attempts to regain their lead, Rayo Vallecano were unable to breach Valencia’s stubborn defense, who held firm to extend the team’s unbeaten streak to seven games.

The result means that Valencia remain 14th on the table with 38 points in 32 games while Rayo Vallecano climb up to ninth with 41 points in the same number of games.

Sadiq Umar will hope to increase his goalscoring tally and extend Valencia’s unbeaten run when they face Espanyol in their next league game on Tuesday, April 22. Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano face a huge task in their upcoming match, facing off against Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Thursday, April 24.
