Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) league leaders Remo Stars will be without their first and second choice goalkeepers during the International break as both Kayode Bankole and Obassa Adebiyi were called up to represent Nigeria and Benin Republic respectively.

Although Kayode Bankole is Remo Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper, national commitments have limited his league appearances to just seven games this season. In his absence, Obassa Adebiyi has stepped up, delivering impressive performances that have contributed significantly to Remo Stars’ eight-point lead over Rivers United in the league standings.

However, Kayode Bankole received his maiden Super Eagles call-up for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe while Obassa Adebiyi also earned a call-up to represent Benin Republic in their matches against Zimbabwe and South Africa.

The international call-ups serve as mixed blessings for Remo Stars’ management and fans as the league leaders face a daunting challenge without their top two goalkeepers during a critical juncture in the title race, where a slip-up could prove costly.

This development has reignited the debate about the league’s scheduling, with supporters arguing that the season should be temporarily halted during international breaks to prevent such disruptions.

Nonetheless, Remo Stars will aim to maintain their title momentum when they take on Heartland Owerri on March 16, followed by a trip to face relegation battlers Lobi Stars during the international break.
