Nigerian attacker Philip Otele continued his impressive form for Basel, scoring a brace and assisting another goal to secure a 4-0 win against FC Zürich in their Swiss Super League clash on Saturday.
Philip Otele has been a remarkable addition to Basel’s attack since joining the Swiss side on loan from Al-Wahda in January. The 25-year-old had scored four goals and contributed one assist in 13 games, prompting head coach Fabio Celestini to include him in the starting line-up once again as the visitors sought to secure their fourth straight win.
The Nigerian wasted no time in repaying the coach’s trust, scoring his fifth goal for Basel in the 10th minute to give them the lead before assisting Xherdan Shaqiri’s goal just before halftime, increasing his side’s advantage going into the second half.

Despite attempts to level the scoreline, Basel increased the deficit in the 52nd minute as Xherdan Shaqiri scored his second goal of the game to all but seal the visitor’s win. Few minutes after, Philip Otele wrapped up the victory with another brilliant finish, ultimately securing a dominant 4-0 triumph over FC Zürich.
The impressive win meant that Basel remained on top of the Super League with 58 points in 32 matches, seven points ahead of second-placed Servette who have a game in hand. Meanwhile, FC Zürich sit sixth with 47 points after the same number of games.
Basel, who are fighting to lift the Super League for the first time since 2017 will be eager to extend their winning run when they host Yverdon in their next league game on Monday, April 21 while FC Zürich will aim to bounce back when they travel to face Young Boys after suffering their first defeat in over one month.
