Remo Stars’ lead at the top of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) has narrowed to eight points after they suffered a 2-1 loss to Bendel Insurance, while Rivers United closed the gap with a late 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes.
Remo Stars have been struggling with consistency in recent games, securing two wins and two losses in their last four NPFL games, making their clash with Bendel Insurance a challenging one. The “Benin Arsenal” on the other hand, have been on a resurgence, losing only two games in their previous 13.
Bendel Insurance made a strong start, with Meyiwa Oritseweyinmi scoring just two minutes into the game, giving the home team an early lead against the league leaders. Despite Remo Stars’ attempt to quickly respond, Bendel Insurance remained resilient, taking their lead into halftime.
The home side extended their lead 10 minutes into the second half, with Meyiwa Oritseweyinmi netting his second goal of the game, further frustrating Remo Stars who scored a late goal through Samuel Anakwe’s strike, but it was not enough as Bendel Insurance held on to secure their eighth consecutive home win.
On the other hand, Rivers United continued to push for a title challenge, securing a late 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes courtesy of Samson Obi’s 83rd-minute winner, extending their unbeaten run at home to eight games.
The results saw Remo Stars retain their top spot with 54 points, while Bendel Insurance climbed to ninth with 38 points. Rivers United have now accrued 46 points, eight points behind the league leaders, while Niger Tornadoes drop to 11th with 37 points.
