The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed Nigeria’s interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games — the 24th edition of the multi-sport event — in Abuja.
According to a statement released by the committee, Nigeria met the March 18, 2025 deadline to express interest in hosting the tournament, paving the way for a possible bid with the support of the Federal Government.
Nigeria’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, as per NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya, aims to highlight the country’s growth, boost its international image, and revitalise its sports culture.
“That experience will provide a solid foundation for Nigeria to host again, showcasing its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required by such events,” the statement read.
“This would also provide a compelling narrative for the nation’s progress and readiness.”
Nigeria previously bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, but lost to Glasgow, Scotland. However, the country has the experience of hosting a major international event, having successfully organized the 2003 African Games.
