Tawanda Chirewa scored a late goal to break Super Eagles hearts, helping Zimbabwe secure a 1-1 draw in their World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Tuesday.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle retained the same team that defeated Rwanda 2-0 at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali, with goal scorer Victor Osimhen joined in attack by Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon.

Nigeria made a fast start to the game, dictating the pace and creating scoring opportunities, with Victor Osimhen at the forefront, as they unleashed over three shots on target within the first few minutes. However, Zimbabwe remained resilient, keeping the scoreline level until halftime.

The second half saw Zimbabwe maintain their defensive solidity, thwarting the Super Eagles’ relentless pursuit of a goal and frustrating Nigeria’s determined efforts to break the deadlock.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute, as Nigeria crafted a stunning attacking move, culminating in Ola Aina delivering a pinpoint cross that Victor Osimhen powerfully headed into the net, giving the Super Eagles the lead. With the win almost wrapped up, Tawanda Chirewa scored a late goal, leveling the scoreline and securing the 1-1 draw.

Nigeria’s frustrating draw means they remain fourth on the table with seven points and four games remaining, while Zimbabwe remain rooted to the bottom of the table, still seeking their first win after six matches, with four points to their name.

In the other results of the group, South Africa secured a 2-0 win against Benin Republic, moving up to 13 points, five points clear of Rwanda who move up to second after a 1-1 draw against Lesotho.
