French Ligue 2 club Montpellier have completed the signing of promising Nigerian forward Victor Orakpo on loan from OGC Nice, as the youngster seeks more regular first-team football to continue his development.

Orakpo rose to prominence as the standout performer for Nigeria’s U20 side at the 2022 FC Bayern Youth Cup, where he netted six goals to finish as MVP. He joined Nice in January 2024 and made his Ligue 1 debut later that year, coming on as a substitute in a 2–1 defeat to Auxerre on August 18.

The 19-year-old featured sparingly for Nice last season, registering four league appearances and one outing in the Europa League against Spanish side Real Sociedad. In search of consistent game time, the move to Montpellier presents an opportunity for the forward to gain valuable minutes and continue his growth in a competitive environment.

Speaking to Montpellier’s media team, Orakpo shared his delight about joining the club: “It’s a great feeling to sign for this great club Montpellier. My dad is a fan of the club. In France he supports Montpellier and Paris Saint Germain.”

The striker also revealed the emotional connection his family has with the club: “Right from when we were little, my brothers and I, my dad, we watch games of Montpellier, so it’s a great feeling. When I told him I was going to sign for Montpellier, he was very happy. It was a very good feeling, for me, my family, and everybody around me.”

Looking ahead to the new season, Orakpo set clear objectives: “My goal is to help the team get promoted, score goals and give assists. In any way I could help the team win games, I’ll help them. But the main aim is to get promoted back to Ligue 1.”

He also sent a message of encouragement to the Montpellier faithful: “My message to the fans is to believe in us, come and support us and we promise we would not let you down. By the end of the season, everybody is going to smile and celebrate.”
