Germany U-21 international Felix Agu is edging closer to playing for Nigeria after receiving an invitation to train with the Super Eagles ahead of the Unity Cup Tournament in London and Nigeria’s friendly against Russia.

Born in Germany to a Nigerian Father and a German Mother, the Werder Bremen defender had previously represented Germany at youth level, but is now being courted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as they look to bolster the national team’s defensive options with talented players of Nigerian descent.

The 25-year-old expressed his willingness to represent Nigeria in March, revealing in an interview with football journalist Oma Akatugba that playing for the Super Eagles is a dream of his.

“To play on the National level was always a dream of mine and I had to make half of a decision already because I played for the German U21 but I want to be open,” Agu said.

“I’ve talked a lot also with Justin Njimah about playing for the national team. We think that it would be a dream come true to play for Nigeria and see how it feels to represent your roots.”

“I see on Snapchat, Ola Aina, Iwobi, Boniface. I see the vibes they have in the team and it’s something I don’t think you have in Europe as much. I’ve never experienced it so I cannot judge it but from what I see, I like it a lot,” he added.

Professionally, Felix Agu began his career with VfL Osnabrück before joining Werder Bremen in 2020, where he has made 97 appearances in five seasons.

This campaign, Felix Agu has stood out as one of the top fullbacks in the league, netting three goals in 21 starts and playing a crucial role in Werder Bremen’s eighth-place finish.

The fullback led the German Bundesliga in penalties won, drawing a league-high total of three according to Squawka.

Agu is capable of playing both as a left-back and right-back, offering the Super Eagles flexibility in defensive setups. His tactical awareness allows him to adapt to different formations — whether in a back four or as a wing-back in a three-man defense.

Ranking in the 78th percentile for blocks and 70th percentile for aerial duels won, Agu brings strong defensive instincts and resilience. His ability to read the game and make timely interventions would strengthen Nigeria’s backline, especially in high-pressure games against physically dominant opponents.

With 3 goals in the 2024-25 Bundesliga season and a 93rd percentile ranking for non-penalty goals among fullbacks, Agu is a consistent attacking threat. He can push forward, create overloads in wide areas, and add scoring depth from defense — an asset the Super Eagles have lacked in wide defensive roles.
