Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has resumed training with Rangers after a lengthy injury layoff, making him available for the World Cup qualifiers in March.
Leon Balogun suffered the injury during Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Europa League, where he sustained a knock while recovering the ball from United’s striker Joshua Zirkzee. The 36-year-old was subsequently replaced by Ross McCausland at halftime.
During Balogun’s absence, Rangers underwent a coaching change, with Phillipe Clement being sacked due to poor results and replaced by former captain Barry Ferguson who started his tenure on a positive note, securing a 4-2 comeback victory in his first game.
Balogun’s return to training, along with other defenders Dujon Sterling and John Souttar, is a significant boost for Rangers as they prepare to face Motherwell in their next league game while looking to maintain momentum under Ferguson’s leadership.
Rangers’ chances of winning the Scottish league may be slim, but they still have a chance to make a deep run in the Europa League, with a round-of-16 fixture against Fenerbahçe looming.
Balogun’s return will also provide a much-needed boost for the Super Eagles and Eric Chelle, who will have more options to pick from, particularly in light of Semi Ajayi’s hamstring injury ruling him out of the World Cup qualifiers.
Balogun’s experience and desire to return to the Super Eagles fold may prompt head coach Eric Chelle to invite him back to the team’s camp for the first time since 2022, with crucial matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe approaching.
