Junior D’Tigress depart for FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup maiden appearance in Czech Republic

Nigeria’s women’s U-19 basketball national team, the Junior D’Tigress, have departed for the 2025 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled to take place in Brno, Czech Republic, from July 12 to 20, Bold Sports reports.

The team left Abuja on Tuesday for the global showpiece, having qualified after finishing second at the 2024 FIBA U-18 Women’s AfroBasket, where they fell to Mali 76-56 in the final.

Drawn in Group B, the Junior D’Tigress will face Portugal, Canada, and China. They will open their campaign on July 12 against China, who finished as runners-up at the 2024 FIBA U-18 Women’s Asia Cup. The match will hold at the Sportovní hala Vodova in Brno.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has unveiled a 12-player roster for the tournament, featuring Jessica Ajayi, Pius Idubamo Beggi, Wandoo Marvis Hembam, Gbemisola Samuel, Toby Nweke, and Momoluwa Tewogbade.

Also listed are Nora Ezike, Francisca Chukwu, Olanrewaju Ayodeji, Abigail Isaac, Olaoluwa O. Victoria, and Favour Sampson.

The team will be led by head coach Faustina Akhere Juliana, associate head coach Nyingifa Atonye, and assistant coach Usuwa Chinedu Stone.

This marks the Junior D’Tigress’ maiden appearance at the tournament since its inception in 1989, and they will be aiming to make a strong impression on the global stage.
