West Bromwich Albion manager Ryan Mason has provided a positive update on one-cap Super Eagles striker Josh Maja ahead of the club’s preseason preparations for the 2025/26 season.

Maja underwent lower leg (calf) surgery in January, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign. His absence was strongly felt as West Brom narrowly missed out on a Premier League playoff spot.

At the time of his injury, Maja was the second-highest scorer in the Championship, netting 12 goals in 26 matches, trailing only Norwich City’s Borja Sainz. Remarkably, despite missing the final 20 games of the season, he still finished as West Brom’s top scorer.

Although Maja has not yet returned to full team training under new manager Mason, reports indicate that the Nigerian forward is following a tailored personal rehabilitation program. He is expected to join his teammates for more intensive and physical sessions in the coming weeks.

Speaking at his first press conference, Mason reassured fans about Maja’s recovery and mental state.

“He’s in a good place,” Mason said. “He’s progressing well, and we’re happy with where he is at.”

Since joining West Brom from Bordeaux on a free transfer in January 2023, Maja has faced recurring injury setbacks. However, whenever fit, he has consistently delivered important goals for the club.
