Nigerian forward Nathan Tella, scored the opening goal in Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-1 thrashing of Frankfurt in their Bundesliga clash on Saturday, helping his team close the gap on league leaders Bayern Munich.

Bayer Leverkusen came into the clash on a seven-game unbeaten streak, but they needed a win to keep up with Bayern Munich, who had defeated Stuttgart 3-1 on Friday. Frankfurt, on the other hand, were eager to bounce back from a 4-0 loss to Bayern in their previous game.

After dominating the early stages, Bayer Leverkusen solidified their authority with three goals in under 10 minutes. Nathan Tella scored the first goal in the 26th minute, followed by brilliant finishes from Nordi Mukiele and Patrik Schick, extending the away team’s advantage.

Frankfurt got a goal back through Hugo Ekitike’s strike in the 37th minute, giving them a glimmer of hope for a comeback. However, Aleix Garcia’s goal in the 62nd minute crushed their hopes, securing Bayer Leverkusen’s three-goal advantage.

With the game essentially won, Nathan Tella was substituted out in the 77th minute, making way for fellow Nigerian forward Victor Boniface, who entered the game alongside Ezequiel Palacios as Xabi Alonso decided to rest players ahead of their crucial Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.

The win propelled Bayer Leverkusen to 53 points in 24 games, leaving them eight points behind league leaders Bayern Munich as the title race gets to a crucial stage. The two teams will resume their rivalry on Wednesday when Leverkusen visit the Allianz Arena for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash.
