Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has been included in the official team of the tournament for the recently concluded CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations where Nigeria secured the bronze medal by defeating host nation Egypt.

The commanding center back played in every match for Nigeria and stood out not only for his defensive organisation but also for guiding the team with his experience, having already featured in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, captaining the side to third place in the competition.

Bameyi’s solid defensive performance earned him the man of the match award in the second group stage game against Morocco before he went on to score the equaliser in the final group stage match against Kenya, sealing the Flying Eagles’ spot in the quarter-finals.

Bameyi was named in the official Best XI of the group stage alongside Nigerian left back Odinaka Okoro who was also outstanding at the tournament, delivering the assist that secured Nigeria’s only open-play win during the AFCON (1-0 against Tunisia).

Newly crowned champions, South Africa, led the way with four players selected in the tournament’s best team, including standout goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe, the tournament’s official Best Player Tylon Smith, as well as Neo Rapoo and Lazola Maku.

Morocco, runners-up in the final, also had four players included in the XI – Othmane Maamma, Hossam Essadak, Hamza Koutoune and Faycal Zahouani.

Sierra Leone’s Momoh Kamara, who finished as the tournament’s top scorer with four goals, and Egypt’s Mohamed Goweily completed the elite lineup.

South Africa’s Raymond Mdaka was named Coach of the Tournament, recognised for his tactical discipline and trust in young players, which led the Amajita to their first-ever continental title.
