FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his sadness over the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and Nigerian football legend, Peter Rufai, who passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 61.
In his tribute, Infantino acknowledged Rufai’s remarkable contributions to Nigerian football and his notable appearances on the world stage, particularly at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai who represented his country at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups,” Infantino said in his official statement.

The FIFA President extended his sympathies to Rufai’s family, friends, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), showing solidarity with the entire African football community during this period of mourning.
“On behalf of FIFA and the entire footballing community, I would like to express my sincere condolences to his family and friends, to the Nigerian Football Federation, and to everyone at CAF. RIP,” Infantino added.
Peter Rufai’s death has been met with an outpouring of grief across the football world. His heroics for Nigeria, particularly during the country’s golden football era in the 1990s, left a lasting legacy that is still celebrated by football lovers both at home and abroad.
