Highly-rated Nigerian talent Favour Emmanuel made her long-awaited debut for San Diego Wave as they lost 2-0 to Kansas City in their National Women Football league (NWFL) clash on Sunday.

San Diego Wave came into the encounter needing a win after their 2-1 loss to Orlando Pride in their previous league game. However, Favour Emmanuel was trusted to start in the heart of midfield, playing with Chiamaka Okwuchuwku who started her first game for the club after coming on to score 108 seconds into her debut in the previous game.

Kansas City delivered a standout performance in the first half, scoring in the 16th minute through Debinha’s goal before Lo’eau Labonta converted a penalty to extend the visitor’s advantage and ultimately seal their fourth win in four games.

Meanwhile, their second consecutive loss now means San Diego Wave are down to ninth on the NWFL table with four points. They have the chance to bounce back when they face Racing Louisville in five days time.

While the loss was disappointing, Favour Emmanuel’s debut served as a promising sight for many supporters. The 22-year-old joined San Diego Wave in January, signing a two-year deal through the 2026 season with a mutual option for 2027.

She joined the Wave from ZHFK Lokomotiv Moskva in the Russian Women’s Football Championship, where she made 20 appearances (18 starts) and scored one goal, playing a pivotal role in the club’s Russian Women’s Cup title triumph.

Prior to her time in Russia, Favour Emmanuel spent two seasons with Bayelsa Queens Football Club, helping them claim the Nigeria Women’s Football League title in 2022 before securing a third-place finish in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
