Ezekiel Nathaniel made history at the Jarvis Scott Open in Texas on Friday, setting a new African indoor 400m record with a blistering time of 44.92s.
The Baylor University athlete became the first African man to break 45 seconds indoors in the event, shattering the previous record of 45.51s set by Nigerian legend Sunday Bada in 1997.
Nathaniel’s time is now the fastest in the world this season and ranks 14th on the all-time list for the event. His feat also made him the first Baylor University athlete in history to run a sub-45 indoor 400m.
Nathaniel had only last week broke his own personal record, running a meet and facility record of 45.56s to win the DeLoss Dodds Invitational.
He also holds the national record in the men’s 400m hurdles and qualified for the semi-final of the event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
