British-Nigerian boxing superstar Anthony Joshua’s long-awaited return to the ring is set to be delayed by at least two more months, after the 35-year-old revealed he will undergo elbow surgery later this month.
Anthony Joshua has been sidelined since suffering a brutal knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. While a comeback was initially targeted for spring—around April or May—his promoter, Eddie Hearn, disclosed that an upper-body injury had already pushed back those plans.
The former two-time heavyweight champion was recently spotted in Saudi Arabia, attending the high-profile bouts between Canelo Alvarez and William Scull, as well as Martin Bakole vs. Efe Ajagba.

Speaking to reporters during the event, Joshua, who recently spent a significant amount of time in Nigeria, confirmed that the surgery is scheduled for May and that he will be out of training for six to eight weeks during recovery.
“When do you want me back, people? I’m trying to get my body right,” Joshua told Claudia Trejos during a DAZN broadcast. “I’ve got to actually have a little surgery on my elbow—just a small one—sometime in May. We’re finalising the details. I’ll be out of the gym for maybe six to eight weeks, and then when I’m healed, I’ll be back.”
Assuming Joshua resumes training in early July and doesn’t jump straight into a full training camp, a realistic return to the ring may not happen until October at the earliest.
