Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers has been named in the WhoScored Europa League team of the week after his outstanding performance, scoring and assisting in Rangers’ 3-1 away win over Fenerbahçe in their round of 16 clash on Thursday.
Dessers had been on a roll, scoring in consecutive games, including a brace in a 4-2 win over Kilmarnock and another goal in a 2-1 loss to Motherwell. He was thus given another start as with the league title looking unlikely, the Europa League presented a major opportunity for Rangers to win a trophy.
Despite being the underdogs, Rangers took the lead through Dessers’ 7th-minute goal, only for Fenerbahçe to equalize with Alexander Djiku’s impressive finish. However, Rangers regained the lead in the 42nd minute, with Dessers assisting Václav Cerny’s goal, before Cerny sealed the win with another goal in the 81st minute.

The WhoScored team of the week featured top performers from various Europa League matches, including goalkeeper Nikita Haikin and defenders Odin Lurås Bjørtuft, Jostein Gundersen, all from Bødo/Glimt and Alessio Romagnoli (Lazio).
The midfield trio consists of Dessers’ Rangers teammates Nicolas Raskin and Václav Cerny, as well as Patrick Berg (Bødo/Glimt) while Rayan Cherki (Lyon) and Fredrik André Bjørkan (Bødo/Glimt) occupy the wings. Dessers is joined in attack by Kasper Waarts Høgh (Bødo/Glimt).
Dessers’ inclusion in the team is a significant achievement, following his first call-up to the Super Eagles’ 39-man provisional squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The 30-year old will thus hope to continue his impressive form as he seeks to establish himself as a key player for both club and country.
