Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Sevilla striker Akor Adams, and Kelechi Iheanacho are among the players expected to be dropped from Eric Chelle’s final 23-man Super Eagles squad, set to be announced next week.

The newly appointed Super Eagles coach released his first-ever squad list on March 4. It features 39 players, which will be trimmed to 23 for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Some of the omitted players will remain on standby in case of injuries to those selected.

The team is gearing up for crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. On March 21, it will face Rwanda in Kigali, and on March 25, it will host Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. With Nigeria currently sitting fifth in its qualifying group and winless after four games, both matches are must-win for the Eagles.

To finalize the 23-man squad, three goalkeepers will be selected from the five initially listed, while two will be dropped. The final team will consist of a maximum of seven defenders, six midfielders, and seven forwards, meaning 16 players will be axed from the provisional squad.

Chelle’s decisions may be somewhat easier due to injuries, with Dele-Bashiru and Adams currently sidelined. Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho, Umar Sadiq, Paul Onuachu, Zaidu Sanusi, and others could also miss out due to fitness concerns or poor form.

Additionally, Chelle has given provisional call-ups to eight players, including Remo Stars’ Kayode Bakole, defenders Igoh Ogbu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, midfielders Papa Daniel, Anthony Dennis, and Chrisantus Uche, and strikers Tolu Arokodare and Akor Adams.
