Daniel Daga’s Molde crashed out of the Conference League after losing 2-0 to Legia Warszawa in their second leg clash on Thursday, sending the Polish side through to the quarterfinals of the tournament as they won 4-3 on aggregate.
Despite some late drama in the first leg, Molde had secured a 3-2 victory at the Aker Stadion, giving them a slender advantage going into the encounter at Poland. However, they faced a tough challenge, going up against a Lezia Warszawa side that had not lost at home since December.
The home side, motivated by their supporters made a brilliant start to the game, levelling the tie in the 34th minute as Ryoya Morishita scored from close range to make the scoreline 1-0 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate. While Molde dominated possession after the goal, the home side created bigger chances as they sought to complete a comeback which would see them qualify for the quarterfinals.
The second half continued in the same fashion as Molde restricted the home side to just one shot on target, but were unable to capitalize, failing to test Polish goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz. However, with both sides unable to secure victory in normal time, the game went into extra-time.
Few minutes into the second half of extra time, Legia Warszawa got what proved to be the winning goal as Manchester United academy graduate Maxi Oyedele assisted Marc Gual to score in the 108th minute. Desperate to level the scoreline, Molde launched relentless wave of attacks, however, Kristian Eriksen’s second yellow card and sending off deflated their hopes, effectively securing the home side’s spot in the quarterfinals.
With their European campaign over, Molde will continue their preparations ahead of the upcoming Eliteserien season where they will face off against Sarpsborg 08 in their first match. On the other hand, Legia Warszawa’s next challenge in the Conference League is a quarterfinal clash against favorites Chelsea.
