United States-based football sensation Chioma Okafor has officially committed her international future to Nigeria, despite strong interest from the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Bold Sports reports.
Okafor, a promising player for the Connecticut Huskies at the University of Connecticut, was born in Blantyre, Malawi, to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother. Although she has yet to represent either nation at any level, her decision marks a significant gain for the Super Falcons.
The Football Association of Malawi confirmed that extensive discussions were held with Okafor and her parents. In a public statement, FAM acknowledged her choice, stating:
“The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) would like to inform the public that, following discussions held with her parents on 18th June 2025, USA-based women’s football Scorchers international prospect Chioma Okafor has decided to commit her international football career to Nigeria.

“Chioma, who was born in Malawi to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother, has yet to play for a Malawian national team at any level.
“The University of Connecticut striker, based in the USA, was initially called up for the Scorchers’ international friendlies against Zambia in February.
“However, she was unavailable for selection at the time due to academic commitments.
“Subsequently, FAM received official communication from the Nigeria Football Federation indicating Okafor’s commitment to play for the West African nation.

“FAM engaged the parents and the player, who have confirmed her intention and commitment to represent Nigeria.”
Okafor’s impressive collegiate career in the United States has seen her garner numerous accolades. These include being named to the United Coaches Third Team All-American, becoming a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, and earning spots on the First Team All-BIG EAST and First Team All-East Region. She was also recognized as the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
