Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo says that he had a Nigerian upbringing growing up in Manchester, highlighting his mother’s role in passing down the Nigerian culture to him and his siblings.

Adarabioyo was born in London to Nigerian parents before his family moved to Whalley Range in South Manchester when he was still an infant. The 27-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for England, but represented the country on 14 occasions between the under-16 and under-19 levels.

This means that the Manchester City academy graduate remains eligible to represent Nigeria through descent although he was previously reported to have turned down an approach by the Nigeria Football Federation to play for the Super Eagles.

Nonetheless, Adarabioyo is proud of his Nigerian roots, crediting his mother who ferried him to and from training and matches, cooked for him, and passed on her Nigerian culture.

“We’re very much a Nigerian family and it was a Nigerian upbringing, whether that’s the food or traditionally the way we’ve been brought up, which is a bit different to how it would be here,” Tosin explains.

“The food is harder, stuff like pounded yam, stuff that makes you strong,” he added.

With nearly 100 Premier League games and European appearances under his belt, some Nigerian supporters hope that Tosin Adarabioyo might one day represent the Super Eagles, eyeing his vast experience as a potential asset to the national team.
