Chuba Akpom’s Lille have been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 16 after losing to Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Tuesday, with the German side progressing 3-2 on aggregate
The first leg match between both sides ended in a stalemate, with a 1-1 scoreline at the Signal Iduna Park, courtesy of goals from Karim Adeyemi and Hákon Arnar Haraldsson.
Returning home with the support of their passionate fans, Lille viewed the second leg as a chance to create history by overcoming Borussia Dortmund, the previous edition’s finalists, and advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in the club’s history.
Driven by their ambition to make history, Lille capitalized on their first scoring opportunity when Ismaily expertly won the ball from Adeyemi, sprinted down the left flank, and delivered a precise pass to Jonathan David, who scored with a finish that lacked conviction but still found its way into the net.
Borussia Dortmund nearly equalized in the 20th minute, but Chevalier’s incredible double save and Andre’s subsequent clearance off the line preserved Lille’s advantage.

Borussia Dortmund’s relentless pressure finally yielded an equalizer early in the second half, as Guirassy seized upon a clever flick from Julian Brandt, only to be fouled by former Dortmund player, Thomas Meunier. Emre Can subsequently converted the penalty with ease, slotting the ball straight down the middle to draw the score level.
The equalizing goal sparked a surge in momentum for Borussia Dortmund, as they continued to craft scoring opportunities. Their efforts ultimately paid off in the 65th minute, when Maximilian Beier expertly maneuvered the ball within the box, discovered a small window of space, and unleashed a breathtaking shot into the top corner, propelling the visiting team into the lead.
In a bid to mount a comeback, Lille promptly brought on Chuba Akpom and Gabriel Gudmundsson following Beier’s goal. Nevertheless, Borussia Dortmund’s defense remained resolute and well-organized, successfully repelling Lille’s attacking forays and ultimately clinching a hard-fought 2-1 win on the night, which secured a 3-2 aggregate victory and a spot in the quarterfinals.
After a disappointing loss, Lille will shift their focus to the Ligue 1, as they prepare to face Nantes on Saturday where a win could potentially catapult them into the top four. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund will continue their Champions League campaign with a highly anticipated quarterfinal matchup against Barcelona.
