Botswana, the Super Falcons’ next Group B opponents at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), are set to receive a major boost with the return of two key players who missed their 1-0 opening game loss to Algeria.

Turkish-based defender Lone Gaofetoge and striker Nandi Mahlasela, both suspended for the clash against Algeria, are expected to return to the starting lineup against Nigeria on Thursday at the Stade El Arbi Zaouli in Casablanca.

Mahlasela and Gaofetoge were booked during qualifying matches. WAFCON regulations stipulate that accumulated cards from the qualifiers are carried into the final tournament.

The Super Falcons began their WAFCON campaign in style with a commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia on Sunday, courtesy of goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo.

Aiming for a record-extending 10th title in Morocco, the nine-time champions will look to maintain their strong start against Botswana. However, the Mares are hopeful that the return of their two key players will give them the edge they need to challenge the Nigerians.

Despite their disappointing start, Botswana coach Alex Malete is optimistic his side can put in a stronger performance against the defending champions.

“We need to improve how we start our games so that it is easier on us,” Malete said. “We cannot always make it easy for our opponents by starting poorly and only adjusting later.”
