Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface scored a crucial goal for Bayer Leverkusen, helping the champions defeat Bochum 3-1 in their Bundesliga clash at the Bay Arena on Friday.

Bayer Leverkusen came into the match looking to secure victory in order to pile pressure on league leaders Bayern Munich, who had established a six-point gap over the defending champions. However, they faced the challenge of defeating a Bochum side that drew against them in the corresponding fixture.

It seemed to be business as usual for Bayer Leverkusen as they took the lead through Aleix Garcia’s goal in the 20th minute, however, shortly after Felix Passlack equalized with his first goal of the season, keeping the scores level until halftime.

The second half saw Bayer Leverkusen increase their intensity in hopes of regaining their lead. Their efforts paid off in the hour mark as Piero Hincapie fed Victor Boniface the ball to tap in gracefully into the back of the net. The Nigerian striker thought he had sealed the win with his second goal in the 80th minute, however his effort was ruled out for offside.

Few minutes after the offside call, substitute Amine Adli wrapped up the win for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring in the 87th minute to seal the crucial 3-1 victory for the defending champions.

The win means that Bayer Leverkusen have now accrued 59 points in 27 games, taking them three points behind Bayern Munich who host St. Pauli tomorrow. Meanwhile, Bochum remain in danger of relegating, sitting 16th with 20 points.

Up next for Bayer Leverkusen is their DFB Pokal semi-final clash with Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday, April 1. On the other hand, Bochum will hope to bounce back when they host VFB Stuttgart on Saturday, April 5.
