Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun made his return from injury, while Cyriel Dessers continued his goal-scoring form, but Rangers suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Motherwell in their Premiership clash on Saturday.

Rangers were expected to build on their impressive 4-2 comeback victory in Barry Ferguson’s first game in charge as they faced a Motherwell side that had lost six of their last seven games in all competitions.

However, despite Rangers dominating possession in the first half, Motherwell stunned the home side by taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, courtesy of goals from Luke Armstrong and Tom Sparrow, leaving Ferguson’s men with a mountain to climb.

Determined to turn the game around, Barry Ferguson made three substitutions at halftime, introducing Leon Balogun, Tom Lawrence, and Nedim Bajrami, which boosted Rangers’ morale and led to a more attacking approach. The changes paid off, as the players began to create more scoring opportunities, eventually leading to Cyriel Dessers’ goal which increased Rangers’ hopes of another comeback.

Cyriel Dessers thought he had leveled the scoreline in the 79th minute, but his strike was controversially ruled out for offside after a VAR check, leaving Rangers needing another goal to avoid a third consecutive home loss. Nonetheless, Motherwell defended resiliently to secure all three points, spoiling Barry Ferguson’s homecoming.

The loss leaves Rangers 13 points behind league leaders Celtic, who have a game in hand. While the defeat is a setback to their title hopes, they will aim to bounce back in their Europa League clash with Fenerbahçe on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Motherwell’s impressive win lifts them to sixth place with 37 points, and they will seek to maintain their momentum when they host St. Mirren on Saturday.
