Genk forward Tolu Arokodare has opened his international account for Nigeria, netting a crucial equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw for the Super Eagles against Russia in the International friendly held in Moscow this evening.

Tolu Arokodare began the match on the bench as Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface spearheaded Nigeria’s attack. But it was the 24-year-old who ultimately rescued the Super Eagles, coming off the bench to score shortly after his introduction and preserve Eric Chelle’s unbeaten start as head coach.

Russia broke the deadlock in the 27th minute after a dangerous low cross into Nigeria’s box took an unfortunate deflection off Semi Ajayi, trickling into an empty net to hand the hosts the lead.

The Russians held firm for much of the encounter, dominating possession and limiting Nigeria’s chances, but they failed to extend their advantage as the Super Eagles stayed compact and disciplined at the back while Maduka Okoye was unbeatable in goal, keeping the visitors in the game.

Nigeria eventually found their breakthrough in the 71st minute when Tolu Arokodare capitalised on a costly error by Paris Saint Germain goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, calmly slotting home to draw the Super Eagles level.

The result keeps the Super Eagles unbeaten under head coach Eric Chelle, who has now overseen two victories over Rwanda and Ghana, a Unity Cup triumph on penalties over Jamaica, and draws against both Zimbabwe and Russia.
