New Super Eagles invitee, Tolu Arokodare continued his impressive form, scoring his third goal in five games to help Genk secure a 2-1 victory over Union St.Gilloise at the Cegeka Arena on Saturday.

Genk were confident going into the crucial encounter, having maintained a nine-game unbeaten streak and a nine-point lead over second-placed Club Brugge. However, they faced a stiff challenge from Union St.Gilloise, who had won their last four games in all competitions.

Despite dominating possession and creating scoring opportunities, Genk struggled to find the back of the net in the first half. However, the breakthrough came in the 69th minute when Arokodare received a cutback from Nikolas Sattlberger before finishing expertly to give the home side the lead.

Genk doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute through Hyun-Gyu Oh’s goal, following an unselfish pass from Noah Adedeji-Sternberg and although Union St.Gilloise pulled a goal back through Anouar Ait El Hadj, the league leaders held on to secure a hard-fought 2-1 win.

With the regular season now over, the victory took Genk to 68 points in 30 games, extending their lead to 12 points over Club Brugge, who have a game in hand. Meanwhile, Union St.Gilloise remain third with 55 points.

Arokodare’s goal took his tally to 17 goals and five assists in 30 league games, an impressive return for the 24-year-old striker who remains the leading goal scorer in the Belgian Pro League.

The remarkable performances of Nigerian attackers, including Arokodare and Victor Osimhen, who scored a hat-trick on Saturday, will have Nigerian fans excited ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
