Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare continues to make a strong case for a Super Eagles call-up in March, scoring his 16th league goal of the season in Genk’s 1-1 draw with Sporting Charleroi on Friday.
Going into the game, Genk aimed to extend their seven-game unbeaten streak and solidify their top spot in the league table. However, they faced a resilient Sporting Charleroi side that had only lost once in their previous six games.
The first half saw limited scoring opportunities, with Genk controlling the game and hitting the woodwork once. Despite their dominance, they failed to score the crucial goal as the contest remained level going into halftime.
The second half continued in a similar pattern, with Genk maintaining control but struggling to convert their chances. Sporting Charleroi gradually gained momentum, creating their own scoring opportunities but failing to capitalize.
With the scores tied, the breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute when Jarne Steuckers delivered a precise cross, which Tolu Arokodare expertly guided into the net for his 16th league goal.
However, undeterred by the set back, Sporting Charleroi equalized late in the game through Dann Heyman’s penalty, forcing both teams to settle for a draw after a hard-fought contest.
The result took Genk to 62 points in 28 games, 10 points clear of second-placed Club Brugge. The league leaders will aim to return to winning ways when they face FCV Denver EH on March 8, while Sporting Charleroi host KV Mechelen on the same day.
Tolu Arokodare’s impressive form, with 16 league goals and 18 goals in all competitions, has strengthened his case for Super Eagles selection ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in March. With the national team camp opening in Kigali on March 16, Arokodare will be eager to showcase his skills and secure a spot in the team.
