Joe Aribo could be on the move, with the Super Eagles midfielder reportedly pushing for an exit from Southampton and a return to Rangers not off the table.

The 28-year-old has struggled for consistent playing time since joining the Saints from Rangers in 2022. And after Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, Aribo is said to be keen on a fresh start elsewhere.

According to the Daily Mail, Aribo has informed Southampton of his desire to leave this summer, with just one year left on his contract. Turkish outlet Fotomac further reports that the Super Eagles midfielder has asked his agent to find him a new club, with Trabzonspor showing interest.

While a move to Turkey could be on the horizon, the possibility of reuniting with Russell Martin at Rangers may also be an option. Martin, who recently took over as Rangers’ head coach, previously worked with Aribo at Southampton and has spoken glowingly of the player.

“He’s been a brilliant teammate, an amazing character as you know. He’s humble, works hard, smiling,” Martin said during their time together.
“I’ve not seen many players or teammates that are as popular as him, even when you’re not playing, which is like the biggest credit to him, really.”

Martin also highlighted how well Aribo fits into his footballing approach:
“You trust him to go and put a certain level of performance on the pitch and to want the ball, to run for his teammates.

“He’s a brilliant teammate and I think he’s someone that you trust.”

Aribo became a fan favourite during his time in Glasgow, memorably scoring in the 2022 UEFA Europa League final. His departure was framed as a move for personal and professional growth.

“I had some offers down south but I chose to go away from home, come out of my comfort zone — which is so important for your own growth personally,” Aribo said after leaving Rangers.

“So for me, life is about little steps to get to your goal and that’s why I made the choice to go up there. And then why I came back to Southampton.”

After falling down the pecking order under successive managers last season, Aribo made just 10 appearances following Martin’s sacking. With Southampton now facing another year in the Championship, the Nigerian international appears ready for his next challenge.
