Former British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly exploring the possibility of investing in EFL Championship club Watford FC.

Born and raised in Watford, Anthony Joshua still resides in the area and is widely regarded as a local hero thanks to his global success in boxing. The 35-year-old, who won gold at the 2012 London Olympics and turned professional in 2013, is estimated to have earned around $110 million from the sport.

Over the years, he has diversified his wealth by investing in businesses across the globe, including real estate in London.

According to reports in England, Joshua is now eyeing a stake in his hometown club. Speaking to Seconds Out, he explained that he’s focused on investing in long-term, meaningful ventures rather than spending recklessly, and Watford FC is one such opportunity.

“We wanted to move into private equity, venture capital funds,” Joshua told Seconds Out, per TalkSport.

“As you earn, naturally you want to save, so rather than me spending recklessly I’m trying to invest money into certain asset classes — and that [Watford] was an opportunity that presented itself.

“Nothing’s come of it yet. It’s a serious investment. If it comes off, it’s one that should do well.

“If they went back to the Premier League, then I’d need to get a shop on Market Street because the traffic that would be coming through Watford would be phenomenal.

“I’m not a massive football fan myself, but watching the fans stream down Market Street and into Vicarage Road — those were great scenes. If we don’t do it, then good luck to them anyway because they’re a great team.”

Watford finished 14th in the 2024/25 Championship season, comfortably securing their place in the division for another year. The Hornets, who last played in the Premier League in the 2021/22 season, have been pushing for a return to the top flight ever since.
