Nigeria’s Amaju Melvin Pinnick has lost his bid to retain his seat as a member of the 37-person FIFA Council, the top governing body for world football during the 14th Extraordinary General Assembly of CAF on Wednesday.
The former NFF president fell short by just one vote, securing 28 votes compared to Souleiman Hassan Waberi of Djibouti’s 29 votes, which earned him the fifth spot on the FIFA Council.
The newly elected members of the FIFA Council from 2025-2029 include notable figures such as Patrice Motsepe, Faouzi Lekjaa, Ahmed Yahya, Kanizat Ibrahim, Souleiman Hassan Waberi, Hamidou Djibrilla, and Hani Abo Rida.
Pinnick initially secured his seat on the FIFA Council on March 12, 2021, after defeating Malawian FA president Walter Nyamilandu by a significant margin of 43 votes to 8 during the CAF General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco. This achievement made him the third Nigerian to join the council, following in the footsteps of Oyo Orok Oyo (1980-1988) and Amos Adamu (2006-2010).
In addition to his tenure in the FIFA Council, Pinnick served as the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) from 2014 to 2022. He was first elected as NFF president in September 2014 and re-elected on September 20, 2018. Pinnick also held the position of First Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from September 2018 to July 2019.
