AFN invites Adegoke, Consider Ekanem, 31 others for African Games camp

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced the names of 33 athletes, 17 men and 16 women to camp to represent the country at the 13th African Games in Ghana next month.

The athletes, who will compete in 21 disciplines, will camp in Abuja from Thursday, February 22, until they depart for Ghana.

The AFN Secretary General, Rita Mosindi, revealed the list on Wednesday.

The women’s team is led by Olayinka Olajide, the winner of the women’s 100m and 200m titles at the National Trials.

She is joined by other sprinters such as Blessing Ogundiran and Tiana Justina Eyakpobeyan, and quarter-milers such as Patience Okon, Esther Elo Joseph, and Esther Okon.

The men’s team features sprinters such as Consider Ekanem, Israel Okon, Enoch Adegoke, and Fakorede Adekalu, and other athletes such as Sikiru Adeyemi, Daniel Atinaya, Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli, and Nnamani Johnson in the 400m.

Okon won the men’s 100m title at the National Trials, while Ekanem claimed gold in the 200m after facing disqualification in the 100m final.

The athletes will be coached by experienced trainers such as Samuel Onikeku, Teye Endurance, Solomon Aliyu, Kayode Yahaya, Deji Aliu, Mohammed Dabo, Adamu, Kennet, Onaguluchi, and Gabriel Okon.

MEN:

– 100m (4): Consider Ekanem, Israel Okon, Enoch Adegoke, Fakorede Adekalu
– 400m (5): Sikiru Adeyemi, Daniel Atinaya, Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli, Nnamani Johnson
– 800/1500m (1): Hamid Sambo
– Marathon (1): Shehu Mu’azu
– Javelin (1): Samuel Kure
– 110m Hurdles (1): Musa Great Wisdom
– Shot Put (1): Emeka Ugwu
– Long Jump (1): Njoku Emmanuel
– High Jump (1): Fiaku Good luck
– Discus (1): Onukwe Ifeanyi

WOMEN:

– 100m (3): Olayinka Olajide, Blessing Ogundiran, Tiana Justina Eyakpobeyan
– 400m (3): Patience Okon, Esther Elo Joseph, Esther Okon
– 800m (1): Comfort Anietie
– Long Jump (1): Pristina Ochonogor
– Heptathlon (1): Kemi Francis-Petersen
