Experienced Algerian coach, Adel Amrouche, has been appointed as the new head coach of Rwanda’s national team, marking his return to the coaching scene ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.
The Rwandan Football Federation (FERWAFA) officially announced Amrouche’s appointment on Sunday March 2, revealing that he has signed a 24-month contract and his primary objective will be to revitalize the Amavubi and guide them to the 2027 AFCON.
Amrouche will be assisted by Eric Nshimiyimana and Dr. Carolin Braun, forming a new technical team for Rwanda’s national side. With his extensive experience, Amrouche is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the team.
Not only is he a former defensive midfielder, Amrouche also boasts an impressive coaching resume, having managed seven national teams, including Kenya, Libya, and Tanzania. He has also coached prominent Algerian clubs USM Alger and MC Alger.
Amrouche’s most recent coaching stint was with Tanzania at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Now, he faces a new challenge in Rwanda, where he will focus on rebuilding the national team.
The appointment of Adel Amrouche has brought relief to concerned Rwandan fans, especially with the looming clash against Nigeria, an encounter that Rwanda won in November 2024 under former coach Spittler.
With the World Cup qualifiers approaching, Amrouche will make his debut as Rwanda’s head coach against the Super Eagles on March 21 in a clash that will also mark Eric Chelle’s first game in charge of the Super Eagles, setting the stage for an exciting encounter.
Rwanda currently leads Group C on goal difference with seven points, tied with South Africa and Benin in second and third place, respectively. Lesotho sits fourth with five points, while Nigeria occupies fifth with three points, and Zimbabwe trails at the bottom with two points.
